چکیده

We study the strip packing problem, in which a set of two-dimensional rectangular items has to be packed in a rectangular strip of fixed width and infinite height, with the aim of minimizing the height used. The problem is important because it models a large number of real-world applications, including cutting operations where stocks of materials such as paper or wood come in large rolls and have to be cut with minimum waste, scheduling problems in which tasks require a contiguous subset of identical resources, and container loading problems arising in the transportation of items that cannot be stacked one over the other. The strip packing problem has been attacked in the literature with several heuristic and exact algorithms, but, nevertheless, benchmark instances of small size remain unsolved to proven optimality since many years. In this paper we propose a new exact method that solves a large number of the open benchmark instances within a limited computational effort. Our method is based on a Benders' decomposition, in which in the master we cut items into unit-width slices and pack them contiguously in the strip, and in the slave we attempt to reconstruct the rectangular items by fixing the vertical positions of their unit-width slices. If the slave proves that the reconstruction of the items is not possible, then a cut is added to the master, and the algorithm is re-iterated. We show that both the master and the slave are strongly NP-hard problems, and solve them with tailored pre-processing, lower and upper bounding techniques, and exact algorithms. We also propose several new techniques to improve the standard Benders' cuts, using the so-called combinatorial Benders' cuts, and an additional lifting procedure. Extensive computational tests show that the proposed algorithm provides a substantial breakthrough with respect to previously published algorithms.

A Logic-Based Benders Decomposition Approach for the 3-Staged Strip Packing Problem

We consider the 3-staged Strip Packing Problem, in which rectangular items have to be arranged onto a rectangular strip of fixed width, such that the items can be obtained by three stages of guillotine cuts while the required strip height is to be minimized. We propose a new logic-based Benders decomposition with two kinds of Benders cuts and compare it with a compact integer linear programming...

A new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing

Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...

A Combinatorial Benders' decomposition for the lock scheduling problem

This paper presents an exact algorithm for the Lock Scheduling Problem (LSP) based on a Combinatorial Benders decomposition. LSP consists of three strongly interconnected sub problems: scheduling the lockages, assigning ships to chambers, and positioning the ships inside the chambers. These three sub problems are interpreted resp. as a scheduling, an assignment, and a packing problem. By combin...

Scenario-based modeling for multiple allocation hub location problem under disruption risk: multiple cuts Benders decomposition approach

The hub location problem arises in a variety of domains such as transportation and telecommunication systems. In many real-world situations, hub facilities are subject to disruption. This paper deals with the multiple allocation hub location problem in the presence of facilities failure. To model the problem, a two-stage stochastic formulation is developed. In the proposed model, the number of ...

A Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem

In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...
